OUR MISSION

We help magazines become their best selves. From bold launches to transformative redesigns, we shape brands that honor their story and command attention.

We don’t just design, we define. We don’t just refresh, we build meaning that lasts.

This is editorial design with purpose.

About Us

  • Carla Frank doesn't just design magazines—she creates success stories. As the founding design director of O, The Oprah Magazine—the most successful magazine launch in publishing history—Carla understands what publishers and editors need to connect with audiences in increasingly competitive markets.

Known for her rare combination of creative vision and business acumen, Carla partners with publishing teams using an established process to transform challenges into opportunities, whether launching new titles or reinvigorating established brands.

Over her 25+ award-winning years, Carla has collaborated with publishing teams across every category, from global media companies to independent, niche publications. She's helped editorial teams pivot through industry disruption, launch successful digital extensions, and build distinctive brand identities that stand out in a crowded content landscape.

Beyond her studio work, Carla actively shapes the future of publishing as an adjunct professor, mentor, and thought leader who is regularly sought by universities and industry conferences.

Now you understand why has been called “The Magazine Whisperer”.

  • Mark Kelly partners with Carla Frank in higher education assignments under the division of Kelly & Frank here at CFC+ Co. He is a strategist, editor, writer and previously worked as a communications / marketing executive, as well as, editor for four public and private universities and a national education association. Kelly & Frank have reimagined editorial properties for Furman University, Loyola University of Maryland and the In Trust Center.

  • Sarah Viñas, an associate at CFC+ Co., is an award-winning New York-based graphic designer with over 20 years of experience in the editorial magazine world. She has held senior positions at a variety of national magazines, where she has been recognized for her work by the American Society of Magazine Editors and The Society of Publication Designers.

  • Aspen Gengenbacher graduated in 2023 with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, where she became the first student from her school to win the Society of Publication Designers Student Competition, after which she traded in her reporter’s notebook for a sketchbook.
Aspen is passionate about editorial and is aiming to relocate to New York in the near future to pursue her career at a magazine.

YOu’ve been asking

  • In-house teams know the brand intimately. Outside creative directors bring perspective, pattern recognition, and objectivity that’s hard to access from inside the walls. If the stakes are high—new leadership, a new mission, a major audience shift, or a once-in-a-decade redesign—bringing in an experienced external partner can help you move faster, see more clearly, and avoid costly missteps. Think of it as clarity, not replacement.

  • We work best with organizations that value editorial thinking, thoughtful design, and long-term brand equity. Our clients are often at a moment of growth, change, or renewed ambition—and they care deeply about how their story is told. If you believe print and design still matter (and can be powerful business tools), we’ll likely get along very well.

  • Thoughtful, collaborative, and surprisingly energizing. We begin with a deep Discovery phase—looking at your past, present, and future together. We listen closely to your goals, your audience, and your internal team, then translate that insight into a clear creative direction. From there, we shape a design system that balances beauty with usability—one that editors love working within and readers love spending time with. Nothing is arbitrary. Everything has intention.

  • Usually, you feel it before you can fully articulate it. Maybe the magazine no longer reflects your mission, your audience has evolved, or the design hasn’t kept pace with where the brand is headed. A redesign isn’t about trends—it’s about alignment. If your magazine no longer feels like a true expression of who you are now (or where you’re going next), it’s probably time.

  • A redesign focuses on the magazine itself: editorial structure, pacing, typography, visual language, and storytelling. A rebrand goes wider—touching every expression of the brand across platforms. Often, the magazine becomes the catalyst. Because it’s the most immersive and emotional brand touchpoint, it’s frequently the place where clarity emerges first. From there, a broader brand refresh can naturally follow—grounded, confident, and cohesive.
